Business Growth and Hard Decisions
Recently, I was thinking about how much has changed in my own business and the growth that we’ve experienced in the past few years. I’ve been doing our annual planning and it got me thinking about how we’ve been able to double our sales each year for the past few years. As you grow, you have to let go of pieces of yourself that aren’t serving you and you have to make the hard decisions around your business. This isn’t always easy because you don’t know what you want but you have to make the decisions anyway.
Understanding and having a clear plan around where you want to go in business can really make a huge difference. Personally, I like to look at my fiscal year from July 1st to June 30th. This is much easier than trying to do your planning around Christmas time or New Years with all that chaos going on. I haven’t always done that, but I’ve been doing it for the past 2-3 years, and we’ve been doubling our business every year. A big challenge for me is pushing through to that next level each year, and part of that struggle is that I now have a team as well as myself. I am learning to pull myself out of the implementation and allow other members of the team to take over. To be super transparent, this is something that has been a huge obstacle for me because I was so used to handling everything in my business for over a decade. The team has been growing the past two years and this is something that I have to learn myself. I challenge you to be careful about not getting in your own way when something seems scary, because embracing those things can be the key to your success.
